Abstract

A device is needed to provide mounting location and support for an R/C car drive train and steering assembly. The frame provides connections for all components of the vehicle. The suspension must be able to withstand the dynamic forces involved with navigating a Baja course. The wheels are also mounted to the suspension. The articulation of the suspension must keep the wheels in contact with multiple types of terrain. Each component must be compatible with all aspects of the vehicle. There are three major points of interest.First weight must be examined primarily because it effects the speed of the vehicle. Secondly the suspension effects the ride height of the frame, the amount of traction asserted on the tires, and the amount of force on the axels. The suspension components also allow for the proper amount of articulation for the front wheels to achieve the required turning radius. The steering assembly is the last component because it must not interfere with other components of the device. The steering assembly must also be able to steer the device to the smallest turning radius. These components were tested to assess the functionality of the vehicle. The weight was under the weight of 7.5 pounds. 100% of the drive train is supported by the suspension. The steering assembly allowed the device to have a turning radius within 3 feet. The principle engineer was assisted on this project by team member.
